New Year Goals: Tips for a Winning Smile

Did you embrace the holidays and now you’re full of warmth, joy — and yes — sweets? We did too. Now that January is here, it’s time to focus that optimistic feeling on new year’s goals that’ll benefit and make you smile in the long run.

If your resolutions are health related — we’ve got some great tips to ensure a healthy mouth and smile is one of them.

ENJOY HEALTHIER FOODS

New year, new food — right? As you start meal planning or dining out, make a conscious decision to select healthier options. One way to keep healthy teeth is to include sides of salad and roasted vegetables to balance out your meals.

Veggies and foods that contain fiber are good for your diet and also the best choice for your teeth.

BOOST H2O INTAKE

Rather than having sugary drinks, take in good ol’ water. Not only does water intake curb sugar cravings and help prevent extra weight gain — it’s also perfect for keeping your mouth clean and hydrated.

Plaque won’t build up very much inside a hydrated mouth. And acidic foods that can harm your enamel are diluted when you drink water throughout your day.

LIMIT STRESS

Don’t let a busy 2024 bring on too much stress — which can affect mental health and cause unconscious teeth clenching and grinding. Instead, take on more activities that bring you joy and say no to things you’re not that enthused about.

Doing breath-work and meditation techniques (especially before bed) are great ways to lower stress levels.

PRACTICE GOOD HYGIENE

Keep things consistent with a brushing routine that simply involves brushing for two minutes a day, twice a day. Daily flossing will also help take care of those difficult areas between your teeth, and will help dislodge any food — protecting you from gum disease and plaque buildup.

PRO TIP:

This year, up your hygiene game by trying a water flosser. These handy devices aim a stream of water at the teeth and remove food particles and plaque more effectively!
