As dentists, we have seen it all! But on a typical day, we treat a number of routine conditions and concerns. With good oral hygiene practice, you can prevent or prepare for some of these typical treatments.

Here are some of the most common procedures we see in a day:

Fillings

What is it?:

Fillings are used to treat teeth with cavities or decay. Cavities are super common and can sometimes be associated with increased sensitivities or toothaches.

What to Expect:

Your dentist will numb the tooth while they clean out the cavity of any decay, before filling with your choice of gold, silver or porcelain. It usually takes less than an hour and shouldn’t cause any pain!

How to prevent it:

To prevent cavities (and thus, fillings), brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily. Avoid sugary snacks and drinks and make sure to get regular cleanings at the dentist.

Extractions

What is it?:

Extractions are the removal of a tooth. A dentist could pull a tooth for a number of reasons, for example, if it is too decayed to be saved, or in the case of wisdom teeth which may not grow in correctly.

What to Expect:

Extractions aren’t the most pleasant of procedures, but your dentist will completely numb you or provide anaesthesia, so you won’t feel any pain. You may be sore afterwards but after a few days of eating ice cream and smoothies you’ll be back to normal!

How to prevent it:

While some procedures, like a wisdom tooth extraction, are just a part of life and can’t be avoided, you can prevent tooth decay by maintaining good oral hygiene: brushing, flossing and frequent visits to the dentist.
